Leonid Gorokhov, born in Leningrad, now St Petersburg, started studying cello with S. Zagursky and continued with A. Nikitin, graduating the Conservatoire with Diploma of Excellence.

 

In 1982 he won the Concertino Prague International Competition for young musicians( I Prize and Grand Prix), in 1986 the Concours Internationale D'Execution Musicale in Geneva (I Prize and Grand Prix), in 1987 as part of duo winning the Chamber Music Competition in Paris.

After finishing studies he continued to seek advice from musicians he most admired, Daniil Sharan, Bernard Greenhouse, Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

Having met Lord Menuhin in 1990 at his festival in Gstaad Leonid was invited to join the faculty at the Yehudi Menuhin School in UK which then became his home for best part of 20 years. To follow were engagements with the Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonia, the Royal Philharmonic, English Symphony, Enescu Philharmonic orchestras as well as regular recital and chamber music performances with the London Mozart Trio and the Hermitage String Trio, as well as CD recordings, lately with Niklas Sivelöv at the AMC Classics.

 

Leonid has been active as a Professor for cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and since 2008 at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover.

He continues performing with pianists Roland Krüger, Niklas Sivelöv and Alessandro Tardino and as a soloist, frequently including his own compositions into concert programmes.

Nach Abschluss des Studiums suchte er weiterhin Rat bei Musikern, die er am meisten bewunderte, Daniil Sharan, Bernard Greenhouse und Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

 

Nachdem er Lord Menuhin 1990 auf seinem Festival in Gstaad Leonid kennengelernt hatte, wurde er eingeladen, an die Fakultät der Yehudi Menuhin School in Großbritannien zu gehen, die dann für den größten Teil von 20 Jahren sein Zuhause wurde.

 

Es folgten Engagements bei den Berliner Philharmonikern, den London Philharmonikern, den Royal Philharmonikern, den Englischen Symphonikern, den Enescu Philharmonischen Orchestern sowie regelmäßige Konzert- und Kammermusikaufführungen mit dem Londoner Mozart Trio und dem Hermitage String Trio sowie in letzter Zeit CD-Aufnahmen mit Niklas Sivelöv bei den AMC Classics.

 

Leonid ist als Professor für Cello an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama und seit 2008 an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover tätig.

Er tritt weiterhin mit den Pianisten Roland Krüger, Niklas Sivelöv und Alessandro Tardino sowie als Solist auf und nimmt häufig seine eigenen Kompositionen in Konzertprogramme auf.
